Hi Yank,

does the new Kernel update inlcude also init.d from the chinese release? The chinese Kernel does not read Modem Signature and i can use any efs v2 modem which is nice.

Not really ;)

Init.d ?? Init.d is a folder containing scripts to be run at startup, stock kernel (ramfs) won't run them, with my kernel you chose if you want init.d support or not.

4.0a Feedback,
Yank default settings , 1.4mhz zram on default , system animation lags, 2d games lag, disabled zram again the same, installed again the ''aka Chinese kernel'' everything normal and no lags at all. (nothing is running in the background) my system is clean with no extra unwanted services) . Any opinions or different options to try? edit: version 4.0 was smoother but also had lags in 2d games and system animations smoother
Thank you.

Try without zram, chinese kernel (ramfs) is said to not use zram anymore.

zram on games is often more of a drawback, remember I wrote some time ago here that zram is good for multitasking, but bad for, let me rephrase this bit, monotasking a memory hungry task.

Just reread your post, saw you tested without zram as well...

No clue then, as the souces available for the "chinese" kernel are pretty much exactly the same as ours, changes lie mostly in mali...

Here is the diff between "our" Update 12 and "their" Update 1.

He said that already tried without zram and it still "lags".

I'm OK with 4.0, but will try later 4.0a to compare. I will post my appreciations. ;)

About the wake lag, it's obvious statements are generally inconclusive...

My guess is this :

  • wakeup lag only happens when the device is really in deep sleep (sounds obvious, but seems not that obvious to testers as to when a device is in deep sleep, which is not as soon as screen is turned off !)
  • testing a new ROM means giving it time (aka. let it settle in) to build up caches, like media scanner, while this runs, phone won't enter deep sleep as it's potentially actively busy doing stuff
  • turning screen off, waiting a few seconds, turning it on is not enought to enter deep sleep
  • some apps keep wakelocks, thus preventing deep sleep (features like touch2wake do this as well, for as long as you set the delay !!)
  • consider that using zram will slowen wakeup, why, because the tasks unneeded during screen off (the interactive ones) will end up getting swapped out, and waking the device will first need to swap back in what's needed for interactive use of the device
  • some governor settings will also slow down wakeup, like including a screen off CPU max. frequency, even though zzmoove will kick the CPU's butt, as in all 4 cores go online and freq. goes to the max., as soon as it can on lateresume (=wakeup), we need to get to there and that will take time a little amount of time, as in lag

So to be conclusive, tests need to confirm the device was in actual deep sleep and need to consider other factors's influence on it.

And I stand by my assumption, wakeup lag is inherent to the hardware design of the Exynos platform once it's in actual deep sleep, as I never saw this on a Qualcomm device for instance (my htc Sensation and my Note 3 don't suffer from it).

Wake up lag (from deep sleep) appears to be greatly improved with the new kernel (4.0a).

Only time will tell, but it's looking good :-)
